A Chinese business magnate who co-founded Alibaba Group and pioneered e-commerce in China.
This biography of Jack Ma helps you learn English through real historical stories.
Jack Ma (Ma Yun) was born in 1964 in Hangzhou, China. Unlike many tech founders, he did not have a background in computer science or mathematics. In fact, he struggled academically, failing his college entrance exams twice before finally getting into a local teachers' institute. However, he was determined to learn English. He spent years guiding foreign tourists around his hometown just to practice speaking. His early career as an English teacher shaped his excellent communication skills and global perspective.
In 1995, during a trip to the United States, Ma discovered the internet and noticed a complete lack of Chinese websites. Recognizing a massive opportunity, he returned home and eventually gathered 17 friends in his apartment in 1999 to found Alibaba. The goal was to create a business-to-business marketplace to connect Chinese manufacturers with overseas buyers. Despite early financial struggles and fierce competition, Alibaba survived and launched Taobao, a consumer-to-consumer platform that successfully defeated international rivals like eBay in the Chinese market.
Under Ma's leadership, Alibaba grew into a global e-commerce and technology giant, reshaping the Chinese economy. He also launched Alipay, an online payment system that revolutionized digital transactions in China, making physical cash almost obsolete in many cities. Known for his charismatic personality and unconventional management style, Ma became a global symbol of Chinese entrepreneurship. Although he stepped down from his role as executive chairman in 2019 to focus on philanthropy and education, his impact on global e-commerce remains immense.
