This biography of Roald Amundsen helps you learn English through real historical stories.
Roald Amundsen was born in 1872 in Norway to a family of shipowners and captains. Fascinated by polar exploration from a young age, he slept with his windows open during freezing Norwegian winters to prepare himself for the harsh conditions. Although his mother wanted him to become a doctor, he left university after she died to go to sea. In 1903, he successfully navigated the treacherous Northwest Passage in the Canadian Arctic, a feat that had defeated many explorers before him. During this time, he learned essential survival skills from the indigenous Inuit people, such as using sled dogs and wearing animal-skin clothing instead of heavy wool.
Amundsen's most famous achievement came during the heroic age of Antarctic exploration. He originally planned to be the first to reach the North Pole, but when he heard that others had claimed the prize, he secretly changed his destination to the South Pole. This sparked a tense race against a British expedition led by Robert Falcon Scott. Amundsen's meticulous planning, reliance on highly trained sled dogs, and use of skis allowed his team to move quickly across the icy terrain. On December 14, 1911, Amundsen and his four companions planted the Norwegian flag at the South Pole, beating Scott's ill-fated team by over a month.
Following his triumph at the South Pole, Amundsen continued his exploration of the extreme environments. In 1926, he joined an expedition to fly over the North Pole in a dirigible named the Norge, making him the first undisputed person to reach both poles. His life was entirely dedicated to the harsh, freezing frontiers of the world. Tragically, in 1928, he disappeared while flying on a rescue mission to save a fellow explorer whose airship had crashed in the Arctic. His body was never found, but his legacy as one of the greatest polar explorers in history remains immortal.
